The Ultimate 6-Marker Method formula booklet

Long "explain" questions look intimidating, but most of them are really just asking you to walk through a formula's physical meaning.

Open the Formula Booklet, find the relevant equation (e.g. centripetal force), and read its "physical meaning" and "conditions" sections — that's your answer structure, ready-made.

For example: centripetal force isn't a brand-new force — it's the name given to whichever real force (tension, gravity, friction...) happens to be providing the resultant force toward the centre. That single idea is worth several marks on its own.

The Number One Way to Learn Your Formulae formula booklet

If you're sitting Paper 3 and haven't used the Formula Booklet, you're making life harder than it needs to be.

It's completely free, and for every equation it gives you the units, what each symbol means, a short animation, and — most usefully — derivation challenges so you can test whether you actually understand where the formula comes from.

Take the photoelectric equation, $hf=\phi+KE_{max}$. The booklet doesn't just give you the equation — it explains what the work function $\phi$ physically represents, which is exactly the kind of thing Paper 3 loves to ask about.

Physics Isn't That Hard... If You Know Why formula booklet

A-level physics gives you a four-page, double-sided formula sheet — eight pages of formulae. The trick isn't memorising all of them; it's understanding where they come from.

Take the gravitational field strength formula. The Formula Booklet shows you the physical meaning (larger orbits mean longer periods) and links straight through to the related relationship — Kepler's third law.

Paper 3 Is (Almost) Free Marks general

Paper 3 questions are easy to "fraud" once you know the pattern: either the question gives you every value you need (so you just have to read carefully and substitute), or it expects you to know the formula booklet by heart and supply the missing equation yourself.

Before you start calculating anything, do a quick "data hunt": list every number given in the question, then list every equation you'll need from the formula booklet. Anything left over on either side is either a red herring or a sign you've missed a step.

The Underground Fix for SHM formula booklet

Simple Harmonic Motion looks like a wall of formulae — $x=A\cos(\omega t)$, $v=\pm\omega\sqrt{A^2-x^2}$, $T=2\pi\sqrt{m/k}$, $T=2\pi\sqrt{l/g}$ — but they're all on one page of the Formula Booklet, with derivations attached.

Rather than memorising each one in isolation, work through how $v=\pm\omega\sqrt{A^2-x^2}$ follows from $x=A\cos(\omega t)$. Once you've derived it once, you'll never forget which formula is which.

The Best Paper 3 Resource? formula booklet

If you're after one resource to revise derivations for Paper 3, it's the Formula Booklet's derivations page.

It covers centripetal force, Newton's law of gravitation, Hooke's law, the force on a moving charge, and the radioactive decay law — all the "show that" derivations that come up again and again.

Work through a couple of these every revision session and Paper 3's "derive an expression for..." questions stop being a surprise.

3 Tips for Paper 2 general

Paper 2 content is noticeably harder than Paper 1, but the exam itself has a couple of patterns you can exploit.

  • Shove the numbers in. Paper 2 is formula-booklet-heavy — as long as you understand what each symbol means and where it comes from, you can usually just substitute the given values straight into the equation for the marks.
  • Learn definitions from mark schemes. Paper 2 is definition-heavy. The night before, go through past mark schemes and note what's underlined, what says "do not allow" and what says "must have" — that's exactly the wording examiners want back.
  • Lower grade boundaries = free marks. Paper 2 generally has lower grade boundaries than Paper 1, especially if Paper 1 didn't go well. Treat it as your chance to claw marks back.

In the final stretch before the exam, past papers are more valuable than rereading notes — but only if you use them properly.

Work through a question paper under timed conditions, then mark it against the official mark scheme straight away — sites like Physics & Maths Tutor host every OCR A past paper and mark scheme for free.

For every mark you drop, write down why — wrong formula, missed unit, vague definition — and check that exact gap against the Formula Booklet or the Required Practicals page before moving on to the next paper.
